Exploiting functional dependencies in qualitative probabilistic reasoning

چکیده
Functional dependencies restrict the potential interactions among variables connected in a probabilistic network. This restriction can be exploited in qualitative probabilistic reasoning by introducing deterministic variables and mod ifying the inference rules to produce stronger conclusions in the presence of functional rela tions. I describe how to accomplish these modi fications in qualitative probabilistic networks by exhibiting the update procedures for graphical transformations involving probabilistic and de terministic variables and combinations. A sim ple example demonstrates that the augmented scheme can reduce qualitative ambiguity that would arise without the special treatment of functional dependency. Analysis of qualitative synergy reveals that new higher-order relations are required to reason effectively about syn ergistic interactions among deterministic vari ables.

Testing Implication of Probabilistic Dependencies
Axiomatization has been widely used for test ing logical implications. This paper suggests a non-axiomatic method, the chase, to test if a new dependency follows from a given set of probabilistic dependencies. Although the chase computation may require exponential time in some cases, this technique is a pow erful tool for establishing nontrivial theoreti cal results. More importantly, this a...
متن کاملQualitative and Quantitative Probabilistic Temporal Reasoning - for Industrial Applications
Many real-world domains, such as industrial diagnosis, require an adequate representation that combines uncertainty and time. Research in this field involves the development of new knowledge representation and inference mechanisms to deal with uncertainty and time. Current temporal probabilistic models become too complex when used for real world applications. In this paper, we propose a model, ...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Exploiting Intra-scale and Inter-scale Dependencies
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are inherently affected by a multiplicative noise-like phenomenon called speckle, which is indeed the nature of all coherent systems. Speckle decreases the performance of almost all the information extraction methods such as classification, segmentation, and change detection, therefore speckle must be suppressed. Despeckling can be applied by the multilooki...
متن کاملProbabilistic XML functional dependencies based on possible world model
With the increase of uncertain data in many new applications, such as sensor network, data integration, web extraction, etc., uncertainty both in relational databases and XML datasets has attracted more and more research interests in recent years. As functional dependencies (FDs) are critical and necessary to schema design and data rectification in relational databases and XML datasets, it is a...
متن کاملProbabilistic Reasoning in the Description Logic ALCP with the Principle of Maximum Entropy
A central question for knowledge representation is how to encode and handle uncertain knowledge adequately. We introduce the probabilistic description logic ALCP that is designed for representing context-dependent knowledge, where the actual context taking place is uncertain. ALCP allows the expression of logical dependencies on the domain and probabilistic dependencies on the possible contexts...
